Experimenting with the Green Armband project

Many minor hockey associations across Canada are trialing the green armband initiative to combat verbal abuse towards officials. Aimed at referees in their 1st & 2nd years, it is meant to remind parents, fans, and coaches that the referees are learning too.

The tactic when paired with a real officials mentorship program and other acceptable behavior policies can help keep more officials in the game.

"[AIden} Sansome enjoys being part of the game in his capacity as an official, helping control the flow of play. He hopes the green arm bands will encourage youths to try officiating. It's not an easy job, he says, especially when people shout insults."
